The USMLE is a three step exam for medical licensure in the United States. It is computer based and administered by Prometric®. USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 can be taken in testing centers around the world. Step 3 tests are given only in the United States and it's territories. Sponsored by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), medical school graduates must pass all three before applying for a medical license in the U.S. The Step 1 Exam is usually taken after the second year of med school. Subjects covered will include anatomy, behavioral sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, aging, genetics, immunology, molecular and cell biology and nutrition. Step 2 USMLE consists of two sections, the CK (Clinical Knowledge) and the CS (Clinical Skills). The Step 2 CK exam concentrates on clinical knowledge and is formatted as a multiple choice test. The Step 2 CS test, which takes eight hours, examines an individual's ability to examine, then diagnose a patient based on a physical examination and patient evaluation. The Step 3 Exam takes approximately 16 hours spread over two days. The first day will include 336 multiple choice questions in seven sections, each lasting 45 minutes. The second day is split into two sessions, one consisting of 144 multiple choice question in three hours and the second being nine computer patient simulations of 25 minutes each.
